Safety is Skill: Lived Experience Storytelling that Does No Harm (Speech)

Delivered in Arkansas at a state peer (recovery/substance use prevention) conference on August 29, 2024.

We need congruence, compelling approaches, and care on several levels.

Sharing intimate details can be emotionally taxing. We need intentional storytelling to better engage any audience without using our pain as crutches that replace skill. The value of personal stories is priceless. People who use their stories for this work need to be compensated.

What are the repercussions of painful narratives? Do we truly know?

We have the right to protect our stories because that is protecting ourselves.
