The “Titles” Table

I was at a charity event dinner. Everyone went around the table and briefly introduced themselves (many sharing their titles or roles). I said my name and that I work in suicide prevention.

A man sitting beside me turns and says, “Aren’t you lucky to be sitting with such accomplished people? Imagine what you could do when you grow up.”

– Yes, I held my tongue.

First, I hope I never grow up but more than that, I pray I don’t look at those around me as accomplishments I should gauge my self-worth against.
